Cristo Fernandez, widely recognized for his role as Dani Rojas in the popular television series Ted Lasso, has taken a significant step in his career by debuting as a professional football player. The 35-year-old Mexican actor played his first match for El Paso Locomotive, a team in the American second-tier league, during a game held on Sunday.
From Screen to Field
Fernandez's journey to professional football is a remarkable one. After portraying a footballer in the acclaimed Apple TV series from 2020 to 2023, he transitioned from acting to the actual sport. On Sunday, he appeared on the field in the 79th minute as a substitute in El Paso Locomotive's USL Cup match against New Mexico United.
The game concluded with a 2-0 defeat for Locomotive, and Fernandez received a yellow card at the 87th minute for a foul on New Mexico’s goalkeeper, Kris Shakes. Despite the loss, Fernandez cherished his three brief touches of the ball, marking the culmination of his aspiration to play professionally.
Overcoming Challenges
Fernandez's path to this achievement was not without obstacles. Originally from Guadalajara, he played youth football until a knee injury at 15 halted his progress. Relocating to London eventually led him to his role in Ted Lasso, which revolves around an American coach managing a fictional English football club, AFC Richmond.
Undeterred by past setbacks, Fernandez underwent a two-month trial before signing with El Paso Locomotive in May. Reflecting on his journey, he expressed, "This journey back to professional soccer is about believing in yourself, taking risks, and continuing to chase your dreams no matter how unexpected the path may be."
