Bangkok Authorities Probe Bar Fire Tragedy
In the aftermath of a catastrophic fire at a Bangkok bar, Thai officials are scrutinizing potential negligence as a contributing factor. Survivors have reported that locked doors and insufficient signage for emergency exits may have exacerbated the tragedy that occurred late on Sunday.
According to police reports, the fire's rapid spread was possibly aided by the use of flammable materials in the bar's decor, particularly near the stage. Police General Kittiratt Phanphet expressed concerns about a lack of caution, emphasizing the need for patron safety.
Casualties and Injuries
The fire resulted in at least 30 fatalities, with dozens more injured. First responders discovered numerous victims in restrooms, suggesting that they were attempting to escape but were unable to do so.
As of Tuesday, authorities have identified 27 of the victims. Over 70 individuals sustained injuries, with 24 remaining in critical condition.
Possible Causes and Safety Concerns
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire may have originated from a short circuit in an air conditioner, which subsequently led to a power outage throughout the venue. Visitors previously noted that the bar was dimly lit, complicating navigation even before the fire.
Phatsara Khamloet, recalling a visit in May, described the venue's convoluted layout and poorly marked exits. Busakorn Saensuk, a fire safety expert, confirmed that a door near the restrooms was locked and that furniture obstructed the entrance doors.
"If emergency signs were illuminated, patrons might have seen that a door was locked and potentially unlocked it," Busakorn explained.
She also highlighted the use of highly combustible materials like plastic flowers and foam, noting that the stage was engulfed in flames within seconds.
Impact on Band and Venue Classification
The fire occurred during a performance by Thai indie band Thotsakan, resulting in the loss of two band members. The venue was officially registered as a "restaurant with live music," which meant it was not bound by regulations requiring fire-retardant materials.
Worsak Kanok Nukulchai, a structural engineering professor, suggested that many victims likely succumbed to smoke inhalation before being burned. The fire's interaction with flammable materials would have produced toxic gases like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide, he noted.
Regulatory Review and Past Incidents
Bangkok's Metropolitan Administration is currently reviewing regulations concerning the materials permitted for use in the construction and decoration of entertainment venues and restaurants. This comes amid revelations that the bar's owner previously operated another establishment that also suffered a fire in 2019, though it resulted in no casualties as it occurred during the day.
